2007 Season - Genesius Guild
All of the guild’s plays this summer have literary antecedants. Both of Shakespeare’s plays (“As You Like It” and “The Winter’s Tale”) were taken from pastoral works by Thomas Lodge and Robert Greene, respectively, Euripides’ “Medea” was a familiar work in Athens and had been told in Pindar’s 4th Pythian Ode before Euripides’ drama was staged in 431 B.C.E.
Aristophanes’ comedy, “The Frogs” is a farcical literary critique of works by Aeschylus and Euripides, both of whom had died, bringing to a close Athens’ golden period of tragedy.
